Having a child is nothing short of a miracle. However, for many women, it seems like it will take another miracle to get their bodies back into shape after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Diet and exercise can only help patients lose the extra fat, but it won’t tighten excess skin on the abdomen or lift breasts that have begun to droop. To treat these problems, many women have opted to undergo mommy makeover plastic surgery. At the practice of Barry Neil Silberg, MD, FACS in Santa Rosa, CA, Dr. Silberg performs breast surgery and body contouring procedures to address excess fat, loose skin, and sagging, deflated breasts. Read on to learn more about the plastic surgery procedures that are commonly included in a mommy makeover plan.
By the final trimester of pregnancy, the stomach has grown significantly, stretching out the abdominal skin in the process. For some patients, particularly those in their early 20s, the abdominal skin is still highly elastic and will conform closely to the slimmer body contours after the birth. But for many women, the skin will not shrink back to its former appearance. The result is loose, wrinkled skin in the lower belly. This excess skin can be removed during a tummy tuck procedure. During surgery, an incision is made along the lower abdomen. Through the incision, Dr. Silberg can tighten the abdominal muscles and smooth the skin to produce a flatter tummy.
Many women gain weight during pregnancy. Unfortunately, it is not so easy to lose the weight afterwards. If you have extra fat in a specific area of the body, such as the stomach, thighs, or hips, Dr. Silberg can perform liposuction to remove the excess fat.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding enlarges the breasts, causing the breast skin envelope to stretch. When the breasts return to their former size, patients may be left with excess breast skin and nipples that have begun to point downwards. This drooping of the breasts can be addressed with breast lift surgery. During this procedure, Dr. Silberg will create incisions, remove extra breast skin, and reposition the nipples, producing a more lifted and youthful breast appearance.
Patients may wish to undergo breast augmentation after pregnancy to address breast deflation. Many women find that their breasts have lost volume after pregnancy. To restore this volume, and add some lift to the breasts, implants can be placed. Dr. Silberg can place silicone or saline implants to augment the breasts and restore your feminine figure.
During a mommy makeover, Dr. Silberg combines two or more treatments to restore your appearance after pregnancy and breastfeeding. In addition to the procedures listed above, mommy makeover treatment plans may include the use of dermal fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic to rejuvenate the face, fat transfer, or laser procedures to improve the appearance of the skin.
