Even with consistent diet and exercise, small pockets of fat can still remain for some patients. In these cases, liposuction offers a trusted way to remove fat for a more svelte and attractive figure. Barry N. Silberg, M.D., F.A.C.S., is committed to providing his patients with the highest standard of care, which is why he performs liposuction at his Santa Rosa, CA, practice using the HydraSolve® Lipoplasty System.
When compared to traditional liposuction, our innovative approach allows patients to experience optimal outcomes with shorter recovery times.
What is HydraSolve®?
HydraSolve® is an FDA-cleared medical device for liposuction. It is a non-cutting system that selectively removes targeted fat without damaging non-targeted tissues; such as blood vessels, nerves or connective tissues. Small incisions are made in the skin to allow access of the cannula (hollow metal surgical instrument) to the fat tissue, but the system is not designed to cut the fat for removal. HydraSolve® is based on Tissue Liquefaction Technology (TLT), which is a new energy source for medical or surgical use. It is based on a combination of relatively low temperature and relatively low pressure applied in a carefully titrated range to natural saline solution. This warmed, low-pressurized saline stream is contained in the cannula (hollow metal surgical tube) to liquefy fat without damaging non-targeted tissues.
With traditional liposuction, a cannula with sharpened edges is used that act like surgical blades when the cannula is forcefully moved forwards and backwards. With Hydrasolve, the tissue is not cut. The pressure of the saline stream is too low to cut target or non-target tissue, and the HydraSolve® cannula has rounded and dulled edges so that it does not cut tissue. HydraSolve® is selectively liquefying fat inside the cannula while it is moved in a slow and methodical manner to target specific fat deposits rather than using the forceful thrusting motion required in other forms of liposuction. It is a less aggressive technique which results in significantly less tissue trauma and faster recovery.
What is the HydaSolve® Lipoplasty System?
The HydraSolve® Lipoplasty System is a gentle alternative approach to liposuction. It eliminates the need for the forceful thrusting required in traditional liposuction procedures and replaces cutting and shearing of fat tissue with liquefaction of fat tissue. In a HydraSolve® procedure, liquefaction occurs only to fat tissue and, unlike traditional liposuction procedures, it does not cause trauma to surrounding blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues.
Is HydraSolve® a treatment for weight loss or obesity?
No. Like other liposuction procedures, HydraSolve® is not a weight-loss system nor is it a treatment for obesity. Ideally the patient will be within 25 pounds of his or her ideal weight.
Does the fat come back after liposuction?
Each body has a fixed number of fat cells. With weight gain, each fat cell expands, like putting air into a balloon. With weight loss, the fat cells get smaller, like letting air out of the balloon. With liposuction you eliminate most, but not all, of the fat cells in the area where fat tissue is removed. The remaining fat cells can still expand/shrink in size due with weight gain or loss. However, any increase in size of the fat cells will typically be less than with the untreated areas.
What kind of anesthesia is used?
Most HydraSolve® Lipoplasty procedures are performed under general anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist in an accredited surgical facility.
How long will it take to recover?
Because HydraSolve® minimizes damage to surrounding blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, there is less bruising and minimal pain. The unique rounded apertures on the cannula and the non-thrusting movement of the cannula account for a non-traumatic experience. Most patients can return to work in a few days, and can usually return to normal physical activities within two weeks. Peak aesthetic benefit should occur within one to three months.
Can the fat that is removed be placed somewhere else?
Yes. This refers to Autologous Fat Transfer (AFT), which means that excess fat is harvested from an area where it is not desired and re-injected in another area of the body where more fat is desired, such as lips, breasts, face, buttocks, etc.
Am I a candidate?
It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss treatment. In order to qualify, you should be within roughly 25 pounds of your ideal weight. In addition to this factor, good candidates for liposuction are those who:
- Desire to eliminate small fat deposits around the hips, thighs, back, abdomen, legs, chin, or other regions
- Are in good overall health and able to safely undergo surgery
- Do not smoke — or those who are willing to refrain from smoking for a prescribed period of time — since tobacco use can increase the risk for surgical complications and side effects.
Dr. Silberg will evaluate your individual circumstances, review your medical records, and discuss your goals to determine if liposuction is right for you.
