Gynecomastia SurgeryGynecomastia is technically a reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction for men. Gynecomastia is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of breasts, which will improve the contour of the chest. The nature and degree of revision varies greatly. In more severe cases, breasts may sag and stretch the areola (dark skin around the nipple). In less severe cases, it may just be mis-shaped or asymmetrical nipples. Gynecomastia can resolve this range of issues.

Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

You may be a candidate for gynecomastia surgery if:

  • you are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large
  • you are bothered or embarrassed by the development of your nipples
  • your breast development has stabilized (adolescents may benefit from this surgery, but secondary procedures may be needed should breast development continue)

As with any surgical procedure, it’s a big plus for candidates who are non-smokers and who maintain good habits for nutrition and fitness.

Procedure for Gynecomastia Surgery

You will be given general anesthesia or conscious sedation by an anesthesiologist or local anesthesia in our accredited surgical facility.  The type of anesthesia required will be largely dependent on the extent of the gynecomastia and the required procedure to correct the condition.

There are two techniques used for gynecomastia surgery: liposuction and excision. One or both of these procedures may be used depending on your particular condition.

Liposuction is used to remove excess fatty tissue. Dr. Silberg uses the HydraSolve Lipoplasty System for liposuction procedures.

Excisions are made when glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed, if the areola must be reduced, or if the nipple must be repositioned.

Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery

After your procedure, you will be taken into recovery and carefully monitored.Dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used for support and to minimize swelling. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood fluid from under the skin.

Before leaving, you will be given specific instructions for aftercare and follow-up. After you have gone home, Dr. Silberg will be available 24/7 to respond to any concerns should they arise.

You must have a ride home after your surgery and you should plan on having someone stay with you through the first day.

You should plan for restricted activity for about a month post-surgery. It’s extremely important that you refrain from any activity that will subject the surgical area to excessive force or motion during the healing period.
