The abdominal wall is a very strong structure that is made of muscles and layers of connective tissue that surrounds the muscles. The internal organs exist inside this wall. After pregnancy or massive weight loss, the structure both stretches and widens. Fat exists both outside and inside this abdominal wall structure. Cosmetic abdominal surgery can correct these issues.
The widening of the connective tissue causes the central muscles that run up and down (the six-pack muscles) to bow out. This makes the muscles less efficient and causes the abdomen to protrude.
Excess skin and soft tissues that have stretched can be corrected by an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Liposuction, muscle tightening, and skin excision are often done together in a hospital or credentialed surgery center.
Fat outside the abdominal wall can be effectively reduced with liposuction. Fat inside the abdominal wall can only be reduced through weight loss.
Patients often opt to address multiple mid-section complaints simultaneously. Many times liposuction of the hips is done at the same time as an abdominoplasty and some women choose to have a breast procedures done as well, which sometimes referred to as the “Mommy Makeover.”
Pain after surgery is proportional to the amount of time each procedure takes. Prolonged exposure of the tissues can result in exposure dehydration and contamination from the air. When the incision is closed the body has to fight a battle: it must remove the damaged tissue and kill the live bacteria. If the body loses the battle a surgical site infection occurs. The process of the body marshaling the defenses is called inflammation. This is what causes pain.
There are ways to greatly reduce this problem. The body dilutes antibiotics given by mouth or by intravenous injection and only a very small amount gets to where the surgery was done. We use the Silberg Tissue Preparation System to deliver hydrating fluid to the area with the addition of a prophylactic antibiotic delivered directly to the surgical site.
Evaluation before surgery is very important. Smoking decreases the ability of the blood to deliver oxygen to the tissues and can result in wound healing problems. Medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can also be a cause of problems and complications.
