Breast augmentation increases breast size, and can give a woman a better-proportioned figure. It can also correct breast asymmetry when breasts are disproportionate in size or shape. The goal of this surgery is to have the breasts look normal and natural and be in harmony with the rest of the body.
The modern breast implant is extremely successful and safe. It is a saline filled silicone envelope which is placed either under or over the chest muscles. Since the operation is done under local anesthesia and with sedation, the patient goes home an hour or two after the operation.
As with any surgery, there are certain risks. Bleeding or infection is extremely rare. There may be changes in nipple sensation, but these are usually temporary. Hardness (capsular contracture) can occur and might require further surgery. There is a small chance that the saline solution could leak out, causing the breast to become smaller. If this occurs, replacement of the implant is a short procedure which requires little recovery time.
I use a very small incision, which gives the best visualization, and is the easiest one to use if further surgery should ever be necessary.
Adult women of any age can benefit from this procedure to increase small breast size or restore youthful fullness to their breasts.
